Evaluation

We discovered that an average teaser trailer would last up to a mintue long as it only supposed to 'tease' the audience. Our teaser trailer followed this convention by being 48 seconds long. We made sure of this by looking at teaser trailers such as 'Toy Story 3'. We also found that the teaser didnt give away the storyline but simply featured the well known characters. For this we used and developed by adding text into our teaser. This also challenged the convention of a teaser trailer as we had seen that most horror teaser trailers have minimal dialogue so to create an eerie atmosphere our group agreed on using this tool. Knowing our genre is horror we used colours red and black with small use of white to convey what genre it is. These colours connote things such as danger, death and mystery. We used a scratching sound that was repeated all through out the teaser trailer to make the audience feel uncomfortable and uneasy. The sound correlated with the main character scractching on the table to give emphasis to the action as well as the soundtrack. We had our footage shot handheld to give a realistic effect and as if the audience was seeing in from the victims point of view; this creating a form of anticipation for the audience. The sound of the television being turned off at the end was added to give an indication that the trailer has ended. We added this due to viewing other horror trailers and noticing that they end with a noise or image which leaves the audience on some sort of a cliffhanger.

With our film poster we realised that many horror film posters used layers, so our group followed this convention and challenged it by having the layer of the desk and the main character but making it look as one image. Thinking about compostion and layout we had the main character in the middle so that the audience can establish that they are the main character and are important within the film, it also make the character look dominate and in control. We made sure that the main character was in dark clothing to add emphasis to the horror connonation, it kept their identification unknown which is what our group wanted because it keeps the audience interested as to who they are ; keeping that enigma there. Using a similar image from the teaser trailer was purposely done to indicate that it is from the same promotional package. The title being on table shows the table being a main prop in the film and is seens as a form of icongraphy just as other objects and items are in different horror films. (jason vs freddie..icongraphic symbol being jasons hocky mask and freddies hands. Our company logo was placed at the top of the screen in the corner at an appropriate size, this promote the company and lets audinece know what company the film is from. We followed the form of other film posters by film credits, this is an obvious feature so adding it was necessary as it tells the audience small information such as producers, directors, actors and distribution information.

Like the other two promotional products on our magazine front cover we kept the colours the same using black, red and white however we exaggerated the red element more because we decided it would be more eye catching for the audinece to notice and indicates the horror concept as well as writing on the front cover 'horror edition'. We took 'EMPIRE' magazine and used it as a template by following the forms and convention of film magazines. To attract a wide audience we kept the font simple but bold, so it stands out to attract the audience but also not be difficult to read and understand. We included cover lines, advertisement of other articles to follow the other forms of magazine covers. A bar code and issue number was added to show that we understand what it is used for and that it is an essential feature on magazine covers.

To make sure it is obvious that the three products are a promotional package we have made sure that we kept everythin in co-ordination with each other. The colours co-ordinate with each product but having black, red and white included in all three, ensure that the audience know that all three products are connected to each other. Using the main character as the main image in all three products is due to it being easier to identify them in each product so the image is featured on the film poster, magazine cover and filmed in the teaser trailer. There are items such as the logo and small credits we didnt include in every product but have them in at least one promotional package project because having our company not been well known is an advantage because we wouldnt rely on the logo alone to attract audience. Having other features lets us attract audience and become recognised. In terms of creating an enigmas we used low key lighting in the teaser trailer to do this and mise en scene such as black clothing, dark hall ways, minimal but bright lighting and props. The desk was a main prop in creating an enigma because the main character is seen scracthing on the table, automatically it will make the audience want to know why they are doing this. Having the main characters face hidden also emphasises on creating an enigma because the audience can't see their face so they dont know who they are or what they look like. This already makes the audience interested in the film and also makes it our USP (unique selling point).

Receiveing feedback is very important to our group as it helps us to improve and develop are ideas into even better ideas, especially that they are the audience who we are selling the products to. It plays a big part in our project as it encourages and contributes to making final decisions. At the beginning of our project we received feedback from other members of the class which was a small minority of the audience we were intending our products at but as it was early in the project, their feedback was still helpful as it allowed us to make adjustments to our ideas from their opinions and constrcutive criticism.

Feedback we recieved from class members

Joy: I like the idea of the list because I can relate it to existing horror films although its unique storyline makes it sound unpredictable which offers horror fans something new.
George: Yeah ! I prefer that idea because you seem to be enthausiatic with that one as its more developed. I can't say i'd se it myself but i can see why people would want to, sounds kind of interested.
Jordan: Yeah it sounds kinda scary, sounds like other films but not one in particular so like Joy said it won't be predictable.

We took this feedback and developed our ideas. Now we have made all three products for the promotional package, we asked six Hillsyde students for feedback to see if we succeeded in meeting the audiences needs in wanting to watch a horror film, if they liked our products and what could we change if we had more time on our project. Overall we discovered that the genre was well established through the teaser trailer and film poster but was not so obvious in the magazine front cover. The audience would rather see the film from watching the teaser than looking at the magazine front cover or the film poster on the other hand they were able to easily recognise they were all for the same film by mentioning particular things such as the title in all parts of the package.

During the process of the project we learned about diferent technology and how using them will help towards making our promotional package successful. For our research and planning we used IMDB, Google, magazine websites and film websites. This allowed us to have some knowledge on exisitng films and magazines. We then selected film posters and magazine covers to analyse and presented it on mircosoft powerpoint. Shooting our teaser trailer we used a video camcorder and tripod for when it was needed to have a steady shot. When uploading our footage on to the laptop we used a program called Ulead to take out unwanted footage, we use video editor to put our footage in the right order, we used this same program in addition to add special effects and layers of different sound. A digital camera was used to take the photos for our film poster and magazine front cover. We took more than one photo as we wanted a variety of images to chose from to use for our products. Photoshop is the software program we used to upload our chosen photos and edit them in order to make our magazine front cover and film poster. We also made our logo on photoshop and made sure that our logo was not already registered to another film company so there were not complications with copy right fraud. We did this by using the paint brush tool to change the logo on the hoodie worn by our main character. Using photoshop helped us a great amount and we gained alot of knowledge. For our feedback from the audience, we didnt use a handheld camcorder, we used a simple flip camera which was easy to record and to upload straight on to the computer to be uploaded on to our blogs. Other props such as big camera lights and small spotlights were used to create a supernatural effect when shooting our teaser trailer and taking picture for our magazine front cover. Overall learing and gaining knowledge on using different technologies allowed us to create a good project and get good results.
